Italy‘s interior minister, Matteo Piantedosi, announced that over 65% of the resources from the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) have already been invested in various projects related to asylum, integration, repatriation, and humanitarian issues. Speaking at the Giffoni film festival on July 25, Piantedosi emphasized the importance of this financial tool in fostering integrated migration management.

The AMIF, which has a financial endowment of over one billion euros for the 2021-2027 period, supports complementary actions to Italy’s substantial investment in migrant reception. Piantedosi highlighted that these funds have been strategically allocated to enhance the management of migration flows and promote the integration of migrants into society.

The minister also noted the significance of AMIF in developing a common European policy on asylum. He pointed out that the new asylum and migration pact, recently approved by the European Parliament, underscores the need for a coordinated approach to migration management across the EU. This pact emphasizes the integration of migrants and fosters inclusive societies, with a particular focus on the education and integration of young foreigners to prevent marginalization and potential deviance.

Piantedosi stressed that building inclusive societies is a bidirectional process, requiring efforts from both migrants and host communities. The national program for strategic planning aims to use AMIF funds to prioritize the reception and integration of foreign minors, recognizing their vulnerability and need for specific attention. This includes providing services that complement those available for adult migrants, which are mainly financed with national resources.

Thanks to AMIF 2021-2027, Italy plans to strengthen reception services for unaccompanied foreign minors, promote family fostering for minors, improve the inclusion of foreign adults and students in schools, and encourage the active participation of second-generation immigrants in the country’s economic, social, and cultural life. Additionally, the fund will support intercultural and inter-religious dialogue to foster mutual understanding, acceptance, and to combat extremism and discrimination.
