Three community projects in Kerry have been awarded substantial funding, each receiving approximately €5,000 to support the integration of migrants. This funding comes from the Communities Integration Fund provided by the Department of Integration, which aims to assist local projects across Ireland in fostering the inclusion and integration of migrants and refugees into their communities.

The Communities Integration Fund, totaling around half a million euros, has been distributed among 113 projects nationwide. These community-based initiatives are designed to play a significant role in welcoming and integrating migrants, ensuring that they feel part of the local society and can contribute positively.

Among the recipients in Kerry, UpStitch, an initiative by North East West Kerry Development (NEWKD), received €5,000. UpStitch is a unique project that focuses on creating opportunities for social interaction and skill development among migrants. The project involves various activities like sewing and crafting, which not only help migrants develop practical skills but also provide a platform for them to connect with local residents, fostering a sense of community and belonging.

Another recipient, the Community Mindfulness for Integration project by the Southwest Kerry Family Resource Centre, also received €5,000. This project aims to use mindfulness practices to enhance the mental well-being of migrants, helping them to cope with the challenges of integration. By offering mindfulness sessions, the project supports migrants in managing stress and anxiety, promoting overall mental health and facilitating smoother integration into their new environment.

Additionally, the Sea Synergy Marine Awareness, Research, and Activity Centre was awarded just under €5,000. This project offers training and skills development to the migrant community, focusing on marine awareness and activities. By engaging migrants in marine-related education and recreational activities, Sea Synergy not only helps them acquire new skills but also raises awareness about Ireland’s rich marine biodiversity. This initiative encourages a deeper connection with the natural environment and provides migrants with valuable knowledge and experiences that can aid their integration.

These initiatives are part of a broader effort to ensure that migrants and refugees in Kerry can integrate smoothly and become active members of their new communities. The funding from the Communities Integration Fund is a testament to the importance of supporting community-based projects that facilitate the integration process. By providing resources and opportunities for social interaction, skill development, and mental well-being, these projects help migrants feel welcomed and valued in their new homes.

Overall, the Communities Integration Fund plays a crucial role in promoting inclusivity and cohesion within Irish communities. By supporting projects like UpStitch, the Community Mindfulness for Integration project, and the Sea Synergy Marine Awareness, Research, and Activity Centre, the fund helps to build stronger, more connected communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
