On September 30, 2024, in Cairo, the Joint Platform for Migrants and Refugees was officially launched, marking a significant step in supporting those in need. Ambassador Christian Berger, Head of the EU Delegation to Egypt, delivered opening remarks, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between the Egyptian government, the United Nations, and the European Union in addressing the challenges faced by migrants and refugees. The initiative seeks to provide relief and protection to vulnerable individuals, who are often at risk of exploitation by criminal networks.
Ambassador Berger announced the European Union’s contribution of EUR 12.2 million to support Egypt’s ongoing efforts in managing the unprecedented migration crisis. Egypt has been under immense pressure due to regional instability and global economic issues, with the country hosting millions of migrants and refugees. The joint platform aims to alleviate these pressures by improving systems for migration management and refugee support.
The EU and Egypt share a long-standing partnership, and this initiative further solidifies their cooperation. Earlier in 2024, a Joint Declaration on a Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership was signed, which includes migration and mobility as one of its key pillars. This framework highlights the shared commitment to tackling issues such as human smuggling and trafficking, which were emphasized during a recent visit by EU Commissioner Johansson.
Egypt’s efforts in managing its maritime borders and hosting migrants, despite its economic and geopolitical challenges, were praised by the ambassador. He also acknowledged Egypt’s role in mediating conflicts in Gaza and Sudan, reinforcing the country’s importance as a stabilizing force in the region.
The war in Sudan, in particular, has led to a significant displacement crisis, with women and children being the most affected. The EU reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Egypt in managing the humanitarian impact of this conflict, focusing on protection efforts for displaced individuals.
Ambassador Berger concluded by noting the importance of the dialogue initiated through the joint platform. By listening to experts and addressing the needs of those directly affected, the platform will be able to improve cooperation and better serve the migrant and refugee communities in Egypt.
