Libya has called for greater use of football as a tool for dialogue, unity and cooperation during a United Nations event focused on mental health and sport.

Speaking at the event, titled “Mental Health and Football,” Libya’s UN ambassador, Taher Al-Sunni, highlighted the sport’s potential to support both mental and physical wellbeing, particularly among young people.

The event was organised in cooperation with the UN Youth Office as part of activities led by Libya’s mission to the United Nations. The initiative also builds on Libya’s involvement in the Group of Friends of Football and its contribution to the establishment of World Football Day, celebrated annually on May 25.

In a post on X, Al-Sunni said football could contribute to better mental wellbeing while bringing communities together. He reaffirmed Libya’s support for using the sport as a platform for engagement, dialogue and international cooperation.

The event reportedly attracted more than 3,000 participants, over 100 speakers and representatives from dozens of UN bodies and organisations. The president of FIFA, along with former international footballers and representatives of various organisations, also attended.

Libya said it intends to build on the initiative and promote the use of sport as a means of strengthening social connections, encouraging cooperation and fostering unity among communities.

The push for “football diplomacy” reflects growing efforts to use sport not only for physical activity and entertainment but also as a platform for addressing social issues, supporting mental health and encouraging dialogue across communities and borders.
