Recently, a woman sparked a significant online debate by criticizing Indian migrants in Canada, accusing them of damaging the country’s reputation. Canada has long been a preferred destination for Indians seeking new opportunities, and the number of Indian immigrants has steadily increased over the years. The controversy began when Megha Verma, an X user, posted a long tweet expressing her and her family’s disdain for the influx of Indian migrants.

Megha’s post claimed that earlier Indian immigrants were educated, well-mannered, and came from respectable backgrounds. She contrasted this with newer migrants, whom she described as illiterate, lacking civic sense, and incapable of learning. Megha argued that these new migrants were responsible for damaging the reputation built by previous Indian immigrants, leading to a rise in right-wing sentiment among older Indian immigrants in Canada.

Social media users quickly responded to Megha’s remarks, calling her out for being racist and narrow-minded. Many accused her of perpetuating harmful stereotypes and displaying a casteist attitude. One user pointed out that Indians are often the most racist towards each other, highlighting internal divisions within the community. Another sarcastically commented on Megha’s supposed elitist views by implying she believed in the superiority of certain social classes.

While some agreed with Megha’s observations about recent changes in immigration patterns, the majority condemned her for generalizing and demeaning fellow Indians. Critics argued that her comments were not only offensive but also counterproductive, as they promoted division within the Indian diaspora. In the midst of the heated debate, Megha attempted to clarify her stance, stating that her criticism was based on education and values rather than caste.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions within the Indian immigrant community in Canada, as well as broader issues related to immigration, integration, and social cohesion. The reaction to Megha’s post underscores the complexity of these issues and the importance of addressing them with sensitivity and understanding.
