A 28-year-old Bangladeshi woman, Sonali Sheikh, was deported by the Anti-Narcotics Unit of the South West District of Delhi Police for illegally residing in India for six years. Her deportation followed an investigation prompted by intelligence inputs about her unauthorized stay, which violated the Foreigners Act.
The investigation confirmed that Sheikh had overstayed her visa, rendering her an illegal resident. Immigration officials ensured her removal from India in compliance with immigration laws.
This deportation comes amid a broader crackdown on illegal immigration in Delhi. Earlier, Delhi Police dismantled an illegal immigration racket involving 11 individuals, including five Bangladeshi nationals. The group facilitated the production of counterfeit documents such as Aadhaar cards, voter IDs, and birth certificates through a fake website.
One of the accused charged Bangladeshi nationals ₹15,000 for fake documents. During a related investigation, four suspects wanted in a murder case revealed they had entered India using forged papers. They obtained fake birth certificates in Delhi, which were then used to acquire genuine Aadhaar cards.
The operation also uncovered a fake website generating 288 counterfeit birth certificates. The website’s operator, Rajat Mishra, was arrested alongside others involved.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor has instructed the Chief Secretary and Police Commissioner to initiate a two-month special drive targeting illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in the city. So far, over 1,000 such individuals have been identified through door-to-door verification, document scrutiny, and targeted interrogations.
