Latvian border authorities have arrested a German national on suspicion of migrant smuggling after he was stopped during a vehicle inspection near the country’s border with Belarus.
According to Latvia’s border guard agency, the man was allegedly transporting six people who did not have valid travel documents, visas, or residence permits. Officials believe the group had entered Latvia by crossing the Belarus-Latvia border through irregular routes before they were discovered.
Authorities said the German citizen was detained on suspicion of facilitating illegal migration, an offense that can carry a prison sentence of up to 10 years under Latvian law. Criminal proceedings have now been opened as investigators continue to examine the case.
The border guard agency has not released the suspect’s identity or provided further details about the migrants found in the vehicle. Officials are working to determine how the group entered the country and whether others were involved in the suspected smuggling operation.
The latest arrest comes as Latvia continues to face pressure along its eastern border with Belarus. Authorities say they have launched 94 criminal investigations involving 80 individuals suspected of migrant smuggling or helping migrants remain in the country illegally.
Latvia, a member of the European Union, shares a 172-kilometre border with Belarus, a close ally of Russia. The border has become one of the main routes used by migrants attempting to enter the European Union through irregular means.
The European Union has repeatedly accused Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko’s government of encouraging irregular migration toward EU borders as part of what it describes as a form of hybrid warfare aimed at putting pressure on the bloc. Belarus has consistently denied those allegations.
According to official Latvian figures, border authorities have intercepted more than 7,000 migrants attempting to cross into the country irregularly from Belarus so far this year. Security agencies say they remain on high alert as they continue efforts to combat migrant smuggling networks and strengthen border security.
Why was the German national arrested in Latvia?
The German citizen was arrested because Latvian authorities suspect he was transporting six migrants who lacked valid travel documents after they allegedly crossed the Belarus-Latvia border irregularly. The investigation is ongoing, and prosecutors are examining whether the case is linked to a wider migrant smuggling network.
