Former U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested bringing the historic Alcatraz prison back to life. His goal is to use the facility to detain violent criminals and undocumented migrants who are awaiting deportation. This idea, which he first mentioned in May, is now being seriously considered by top members of his team.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed during a press briefing that the plan is no longer just an idea. According to her, Trump told his officials to visit the site and check if the prison could be reopened. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum visited Alcatraz to inspect the conditions and discuss what would be needed to bring it back into use.

“This was the president’s idea. He first talked about it in May and told his team to see if reopening Alcatraz is possible,” Leavitt said. “Bondi and Burgum are visiting it today. If it is reopened, the Bureau of Prisons will be in charge of managing it.”

When asked who would be kept in the prison, Leavitt explained that the focus would be on holding the most dangerous criminals. These would include both American citizens and undocumented migrants who have committed serious crimes, especially those who are violent or pose a threat to public safety.

Doug Burgum also spoke about the visit. On social media, he wrote, “In President Trump’s America, law and order will be enforced. Today’s visit to Alcatraz is a big step in keeping Americans safe.”

Pam Bondi added her thoughts on the visit. She said that she and Burgum are committed to supporting national security. After touring the facility, she shared that the prison still has potential and could be used to house violent criminals and illegal migrants while they wait for deportation.

In an interview with Fox News, Bondi said, “Alcatraz needs some repairs, but it’s a strong facility. No one has ever escaped and survived. That’s why it could be perfect for dangerous offenders.”

Alcatraz, located on an island in San Francisco Bay, was once one of America’s most secure federal prisons. It housed some of the country’s most feared criminals, including Al Capone, before it was shut down in 1963. Now a popular tourist site, the prison has not been used to hold inmates for over 60 years.

Trump’s proposal has caused mixed reactions across the country. Some people believe that reopening Alcatraz would be a strong move to protect American citizens from violent criminals and illegal migrants. They see it as a clear message that crime will not be tolerated. Others, however, have warned that using a prison like Alcatraz again could create serious human rights problems. They argue that putting undocumented migrants, especially those not convicted of crimes, in such a harsh facility may go against international law.
