The migrant detention center located at Fort Bliss has officially opened, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The facility, called Camp East Montana, began operations on Sunday and currently has space for about 1,000 adult migrants. ICE said the number of beds may grow in the future and could reach up to 5,000, which would make it one of the biggest detention centers in the United States.

Texas Senator John Cornyn visited the site last week and explained that the facility is meant only for people who are under final deportation orders. He said those detainees have no legal right to stay in the U.S. and must be removed. He also said the new center must remain open to visits from members of Congress and the media so that the public stays informed.

However, not everyone supports the project. U.S. Representative Veronica Escobar criticized the cost of the center, which is more than $1 billion. She said much of that money will go to a private contractor and argued that the money could have been used instead for health care or public safety programs in El Paso.

The El Paso County Commissioners Court also decided to oppose the new facility. It passed a resolution asking the federal government to provide more information about how the center will operate. Commissioner David Stout said he and other local leaders need access to the site and he believes oversight is important to protect human rights.

ICE insisted that the center will only hold adults, and not children or families. The agency said detainees will stay there for only a few weeks before they are deported to their home countries or possibly sent to other sites. Officials stated that the goal is to process people efficiently and in an orderly manner.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas described the opening of the site as dangerous and cruel. The group said it will closely watch the conditions at the facility to make sure the rights of the detainees are respected.

Why are some people worried about the new detention center? Many critics believe that large detention centers can lead to poor living conditions and may not provide enough protection for people facing deportation. Supporters say that facilities like this are needed to manage the large number of migrants coming into the country.

In the coming weeks, local officials, rights groups, and members of Congress are expected to continue monitoring Fort Bliss to make sure that proper procedures are followed. The debate over the new center will likely continue as more migrants are transferred to the facility.
