An undocumented migrant was shot and killed by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during an operation in Chicago on Friday morning. The incident has raised concerns about how immigration raids are carried out and the dangers faced by both migrants and law enforcement officers.

The man who died was identified as Silverio Villegas-González. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), he was the target of the ICE raid. Officials said the shooting happened after Villegas-González resisted arrest and tried to escape.

In its statement, DHS said Villegas-González drove his car toward law enforcement officers during the operation. One ICE agent was reportedly dragged for a “significant distance” by the vehicle and suffered “multiple injuries.” In response, another officer fired his weapon, striking Villegas-González. Emergency services later confirmed he died from his injuries.

The operation site was quickly cordoned off by Chicago police, and emergency responders worked to secure the area. Authorities have not yet said whether Villegas-González had a criminal record or why he was specifically targeted in the raid.

This shooting comes at a time of heightened tension in the United States over immigration enforcement. Advocates for migrants have long criticized ICE raids, saying they often lead to unnecessary violence and trauma for families. On the other hand, federal officials argue that such operations are necessary to remove people who pose security or public safety risks.

The DHS said a full investigation is now underway to determine whether the use of force in the incident was justified. Human rights organizations and immigrant advocacy groups are already calling for transparency and accountability, urging the government to release more details.

The case has sparked renewed debate over immigration policy in Chicago, a city often described as a “sanctuary city” for migrants. Many are questioning how law enforcement can balance community safety with protecting human rights.
