Tamil Nadu Police have arrested four teenagers in connection with a violent attack on a migrant worker near Chennai, an incident that has sparked outrage after disturbing videos circulated widely on social media. The assault reportedly took place inside a suburban train travelling from Chennai to Thiruthani and later continued near a residential area, exposing serious concerns about migrant safety and youth violence in the state.
According to police, the four boys, all aged 17, were seen in a viral video harassing and attacking the migrant worker inside the moving train. One of the accused later uploaded the video as an Instagram reel, where he was seen brandishing a machete while a Tamil song played in the background. The footage showed the attackers threatening and intimidating the victim, drawing sharp criticism from the public.
In another video that surfaced later, the teenagers were seen attacking the same migrant worker near a house. The victim was struck repeatedly with machetes, leaving him badly injured and bleeding. In a shocking display, one of the attackers posed next to the injured man and flashed a “victory” sign, further intensifying public anger and calls for strict punishment.
The victim, who is a resident of Odisha, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Thiruvallur Government Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. Authorities have not yet released full details about his condition, but officials confirmed that he survived the attack and is under medical care.
Police later detained all four accused teenagers. Three of them were sent to a juvenile home in Chengalpattu, while the fourth was granted bail by the court, which cited his ongoing studies as a factor in the decision. The case has reopened debates around juvenile crime and whether serious violent offenses should be treated differently under the law.
Reacting to the incident, Sivaganga Member of Parliament Karti Chidambaram urged the Tamil Nadu Police to take stronger action to reassure the public. In a post on X, he called for a statewide “show of force” operation, including large-scale vehicle checks, identity verification, and mandatory reporting by known offenders. He stressed that restoring public confidence in safety should be a top priority.
Opposition parties seized on the incident to criticise the DMK-led government, accusing it of failing to control drug abuse and rising crime among youths ahead of the Tamil Nadu assembly elections next year. AIADMK leader Kovai Sathyan blamed the drug menace for such violent behaviour, arguing that the accused should be treated as adults due to the severity of the crime. In response, DMK leader TKS Elangovan described the incident as an isolated case, stating that police acted swiftly and that thousands of migrant workers continue to live and work safely across Tamil Nadu.
