More than 170 migrants have been rescued after a small boat caught fire while attempting to cross the English Channel from France to the United Kingdom, prompting a major joint rescue operation involving French and British emergency services.

French maritime authorities said the overcrowded vessel left the French coast on Monday night and was heading towards the UK when its engine caught fire on Tuesday morning. The blaze quickly damaged the boat, causing its condition to deteriorate and forcing rescue teams to respond immediately.

Authorities initially reported that 157 people had been rescued, but later confirmed the total had risen to 173 after all passengers were accounted for. The rescued migrants were transported to the Port de Commerce in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, where emergency workers provided medical assistance. Eleven people sustained minor injuries, while no deaths were reported.

French prosecutors have opened an investigation into the incident, and an Egyptian national has been taken into police custody as part of inquiries into the attempted crossing.

According to the French maritime prefecture for the Channel and North Sea, rescue efforts began overnight after five people aboard the vessel requested assistance. However, many of the remaining passengers refused offers of rescue from French patrol boats because they were determined to continue their journey to the United Kingdom.

Officials explained that they avoided forcing an evacuation during the night because the inflatable boat was structurally fragile and any intervention could have increased the risk of capsizing. The situation changed dramatically on Tuesday morning when the boat’s engine caught fire, making an immediate rescue operation unavoidable.

The emergency response involved French rescue vessels, UK Border Force ships and the RNLI Eastbourne lifeboat. French authorities also deployed 40 firefighters, 13 police officers, interpreters and medical personnel to support the operation.

Of the 173 migrants rescued, French vessels recovered 110 people, including the five rescued earlier, while British rescue boats assisted 63 others. All were safely returned to Boulogne-sur-Mer for medical checks and further assistance.

The UK government confirmed that the Border Security Command was alerted after receiving reports of a migrant boat in distress in French waters. British rescue vessels assisted French authorities throughout the operation, and officials confirmed there were no fatalities.

Border Security Minister Anna Turley said the incident demonstrated the life-threatening risks associated with small boat crossings and highlighted the role of criminal people-smuggling networks in organising the dangerous journeys.

A government spokesperson said the rescue underscored the dangers faced by migrants attempting to cross one of the world’s busiest shipping routes and reaffirmed Britain’s commitment to working with France and international partners to prevent irregular crossings and dismantle organised smuggling gangs.

The rescue has also reignited political debate over migration policy in the United Kingdom. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp criticised French authorities, arguing that stronger action is needed to prevent migrant boats from leaving the French coastline. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage also renewed calls for tougher border enforcement, repeating his party’s proposal to deploy the Royal Navy to deter Channel crossings.

The incident comes amid heightened political attention on migration following the recent mass migrant crossings into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta and continued pressure on European governments to strengthen border security.

Despite recent rescue operations, Home Office data indicate that small boat crossings remain one of the primary routes used by migrants entering the UK irregularly. However, official figures show arrivals this year are approximately 43 percent lower than during the same period last year, continuing a downward trend that began after the record numbers recorded in 2022.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham recently reaffirmed his government’s commitment to reducing dangerous Channel crossings, saying additional enforcement officers have been deployed on both sides of the Channel to target criminal smuggling gangs. He also stressed the importance of developing safe and legal migration pathways alongside stronger border enforcement.

Earlier this year, the UK and France signed a three-year agreement worth £662 million aimed at reducing irregular migration across the English Channel. The partnership includes increased patrols, enhanced surveillance using drones and helicopters, additional police deployments along the French coastline and closer intelligence sharing to disrupt people-smuggling networks operating between the two countries.

The latest rescue serves as another reminder of the dangers facing migrants attempting the Channel crossing and highlights the continuing challenge for European governments seeking to balance humanitarian responsibilities with efforts to combat irregular migration and organised human smuggling.
