Trump’s renewed anti-immigrant policies, including promises of mass deportations, have sparked fears that many affected individuals may seek refuge in Canada. In response, Canadian officials are taking significant steps to reinforce border security.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police and border enforcement agencies are gearing up for heightened activity along the U.S.-Canada border, particularly in areas like New York State and Quebec. Preparations include adding patrols, acquiring vehicles, and establishing temporary detention and processing facilities to manage an anticipated influx. The measures are driven by concerns that stricter U.S. immigration policies will push more migrants northward.
Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently acknowledged the need for a more balanced immigration policy. In October, Trudeau announced a reduction in Canada’s immigration targets after criticism of the government’s initial plan to welcome 500,000 new permanent residents annually. The revised figures aim to admit 395,000 immigrants in 2025, dropping further to 365,000 by 2027. Trudeau emphasized that immigration remains vital for Canada’s future but must be sustainable.
Historical data supports these concerns. U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported a dramatic increase in unauthorized crossings into Canada from October 2023 to September 2024, with over 19,300 undocumented migrants apprehended in regions bordering Quebec, Vermont, New York State, and New Hampshire—a 300% surge compared to the previous year.
Canadian officials also plan to rely on the Safe Third Country Agreement, a pact with the U.S. allowing each country to return asylum seekers crossing the border.
