The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN agency, has launched an urgent appeal for $112 million in humanitarian and development aid to assist more than 1.4 million migrants traversing hazardous routes connecting the Horn of Africa, Yemen, and Southern Africa.
According to Rana Jaber, the Regional Director of the IOM, building upon previous successful collaborations is crucial for “saving lives and providing protection” while enhancing community resilience in 2024. The funds sought would support the efforts of 27 aid partners operating along the perilous eastern and southern corridors, which are among the most dangerous routes for migrants worldwide.
Migrants fleeing economic hardships, conflict, and climate-related crises often face life-threatening challenges such as starvation, health issues, and exploitation by smugglers during their journeys. Critical needs along these routes include shelter, medical assistance, food, water, and psychosocial support. However, the lack of infrastructure exacerbates the difficulties in assisting those on the move.
In 2023, nearly 400,000 crossings were recorded along the eastern route through Djibouti and Yemen, while 80,000 migrants traveled along the southern path toward South Africa. These figures, however, are believed to be significantly higher, as many deaths go unreported. Last year alone, at least 698 deaths occurred along the eastern Horn of Africa route, with a tragic shipwreck in November claiming the lives of 64 individuals.
The vulnerability of children among migrant populations is a significant concern highlighted by UNICEF, which emphasizes the need for policies that prioritize their protection, including access to education, healthcare, and child welfare services.
In 2023, the Migrant Response Plan provided life-saving relief, protection services, and integration assistance to 200,000 individuals in destination communities. However, with migrant flows expected to increase amid prolonged regional instability in 2024, sustained funding from governmental and humanitarian partners is essential to meet the growing needs, according to the IOM.
As migrants worldwide continue to embark on perilous journeys driven by instability in their home countries, international coordination efforts aim to provide comprehensive care and support to ease their transitions.
