In a flurry of rescue operations, Italy’s southern shores have seen an influx of over 2,000 migrants over the past several days. According to the latest Italian government data updated on March 26, 2,441 migrants have arrived by small boats since Thursday, March 21. Among them, 977 migrants landed on Saturday alone, following 513 arrivals on Thursday and 432 on Friday. The influx continued into Monday, with 380 arrivals on Sunday and 139 on Monday, marking a continuous stream of arrivals.
The arrivals were facilitated by the Italian coast guard and private rescue efforts, notably the intervention of the Mare Jonio along Italy’s southern shores. Operated by the non-governmental organization Mediterranea Saving Humans, the Mare Jonio embarked on a mission that saw significant activity over the weekend. On Monday, March 25, 113 individuals disembarked from Mare Jonio at the Sicilian port of Pozzallo. These migrants were rescued during two separate operations conducted between Saturday, March 23, and Sunday, March 24, in the central Mediterranean. Collaborating with the Italian coast guard, the crew of Mare Jonio assisted in rescuing 179 people, of whom 113 were brought ashore aboard Mare Jonio.
Following an administrative hold since autumn 2023, Mare Jonio’s mission resumed on Friday, March 22, with remarkable dedication. The crew’s commitment was evident when they responded to alerts from the Frontex surveillance plane Eagle 1 on Saturday, March 23, regarding a distressed boat in the Maltese Search and Rescue zone. Subsequently, Mare Jonio, alongside the German private rescue ship Mare Go, initiated a rescue operation for the overcrowded and hazardous vessel, aiding the transfer of 59 individuals to safety.
Continuing its humanitarian efforts, Mare Jonio responded to further distress calls, including one received from the Seabird 2 reconnaissance plane operated by Sea-Watch. The crew successfully rescued 55 individuals, including several unaccompanied minors, from a boat originating from Libya. Amidst the challenges, such as cases of hypothermia and recent amputations due to violence, Mare Jonio navigated toward Pozzallo for disembarkation, ensuring medical attention and humanitarian aid for those in need.
The relentless influx of migrants onto Sicilian shores, evident from the “non-stop” arrivals reported by local media, underscores the urgency of addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean. With the efforts of organizations like Mediterranea Saving Humans and the tireless dedication of rescue crews, the plight of migrants seeking refuge amidst perilous journeys receives critical attention. As Italy grapples with managing arrivals, the collaborative rescue operations exemplify a collective commitment to humanitarianism amidst adversity.
