An olive orchard in Tuscany, managed by the Monasterio Foundation, has become a beacon of hope and opportunity for three asylum seekers. Abdur Raheem and Ghafar Ahmed, both 19 and from Pakistan, and Omolayo Adebowaie, a 33-year-old from Nigeria, have been revitalizing the orchard while receiving valuable training for their future.
This initiative is part of a pilot project aimed at promoting the inclusion of migrants in the production of “Oil of the Heart,” a zero-product-miles extra-virgin olive oil. This effort also raises funds for health research. The project offers the asylum seekers a chance to integrate into Italian society by learning a new profession and contributing to local agriculture.
The training is provided by Etruscaform Srl, in collaboration with the farmers’ association Coldiretti. The asylum seekers are enrolled in a “Green Maintenance Technician” course that combines theoretical and practical learning. Upon completing the course, they will take a test to obtain a technical certificate qualification, with scholarships from the Monasterio Foundation to support their ongoing work in the orchard.
Abdur, Ghafar, and Omolayo expressed their gratitude for this opportunity. “Learning a profession is essential to enter the job market in the future,” they said. They also noted how the course has helped them improve their Italian and deepen their connection with nature. “Thanks to Monasterio and the Prefecture for believing in us and offering us this important opportunity!”
The course is designed to equip participants with the skills needed to set up and maintain green areas, and to prepare land for planting. According to Simone Bertelloni from Etruscaform, the training includes practical activities such as planting, pruning bushes, and caring for olive trees. Sara Petrucci, an agronomist and course instructor, emphasized that the students also learn to recognize and treat olive tree diseases using natural methods that respect the environment.
This project was formalized last May through close cooperation between the Monasterio Foundation and the Prefecture. The Prefecture plays a key role in selecting participants, coordinating, and monitoring the project. Meanwhile, the Monasterio Foundation, supported by local businesses and the Luigi Donato Foundation for Monasterio, assists with transportation and provides tools and safety equipment for the workers.
This initiative not only helps asylum seekers build a future in Italy but also supports sustainable agricultural practices and health research through the production of high-quality olive oil.
