The Italian parliament is currently discussing the situation involving the case of the Mare Jonio rescue ship, which is operated by the humanitarian organization Mediterranea Saving Humans. The ship reportedly faced gunfire from a Libyan coast guard vessel during a rescue operation in international waters. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi addressed inquiries during a parliamentary session, providing insight into the government’s position and actions regarding the incident.

Minister Piantedosi clarified the government’s position, stating that the reconstruction of events provided to the Senate was based on official reports from relevant authorities, emphasizing the need for factual accuracy in parliamentary discourse. Amid accusations of presenting a false account, Piantedosi expressed concern over ideological opposition leading to the distortion of facts, particularly in matters as crucial as migration.

Regarding the detention of the Mare Jonio, Piantedosi explained that sanctions were imposed based on the technical and operational information provided by authorities, in compliance with relevant regulations. He underscored the complexity of sea rescue operations and the importance of adhering to established protocols to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals involved.

In a press statement released by the Italian Interior Ministry, Piantedosi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating irregular immigration and human trafficking while supporting humanitarian corridors and legal entry channels. He reiterated the government’s migration policy, emphasizing compliance with regulations and the paramount importance of safeguarding human lives.
