Bulgaria and Turkey have reported a remarkable 70% reduction in migrant flow between their countries, according to a recent statement from the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry. This significant decrease is attributed to the improved cooperation and security measures that both nations have put in place.

The reduction in migrant flow was discussed in detail during a recent meeting between Bulgaria’s Caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs Atanas Ilkov and Turkish Ambassador Mehmet Sait Uyanik. Their discussions centered on key issues such as border security, drug trafficking, and the renovation of the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint. The Turkish ambassador commended Bulgaria for its effective efforts in disrupting drug trafficking routes, which has been instrumental in reducing the number of migrants crossing the border.

The Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint, a vital crossing point between Bulgaria and Turkey, has experienced a high volume of traffic this year. The checkpoint sees up to 9,000 vehicles daily traveling towards Turkey and about 5,500 vehicles heading towards Bulgaria. To manage this increased traffic and enhance efficiency, a comprehensive renovation project for the checkpoint is currently being planned.

In addition to these efforts, Interior Minister Atanas Ilkov has invited Turkey’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya to visit Bulgaria. This visit is aimed at further strengthening bilateral relations and improving border security measures. The invitation reflects the ongoing commitment of both countries to work together in managing and securing their shared borders more effectively.

The collaboration between Bulgaria and Turkey highlights a successful example of international cooperation in addressing migrant flow and border security challenges. The significant reduction in migrant numbers demonstrates the effectiveness of their joint efforts and sets a positive precedent for future collaborative measures.

Overall, the enhanced security and operational improvements at the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint, combined with strong diplomatic engagement, are key factors contributing to the success of this initiative. The continued focus on these areas will be crucial in maintaining and building upon the progress achieved so far.
