California’s Catholic bishops have issued a heartfelt statement expressing strong support for migrants as fears of mass deportations grow. With President-elect Donald Trump threatening large-scale deportations, the bishops turned to the powerful symbolism of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patroness of the Americas, seeking her protection for the migrant community. The bishops’ statement, made on the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, highlights the anxiety many immigrants are feeling as they face the potential for raids and deportations.

The bishops reaffirmed their commitment to supporting migrants, particularly in this uncertain time. They emphasized that immigration policies should not only focus on national security but also reflect compassion for those fleeing violence, poverty, and persecution. The bishops made it clear that policies must respect the dignity of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status, and must be rooted in empathy.

Citing the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, the bishops spoke out against policies that could harm families or divide communities. They invoked the story of the Good Samaritan, urging Catholics to demonstrate compassion for their vulnerable neighbors, regardless of their background. The bishops also called on Catholic communities to follow the example of Our Lady of Guadalupe, whose message of protection and love continues to inspire millions, particularly those in need.

In addition to their own statement, the bishops in New Mexico have also expressed their concerns, urging the incoming administration to reconsider its stance on mass deportations. Both groups of bishops are calling for a more humane, bipartisan solution to the immigration crisis—one that balances the need for security with a commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of migrants.

The California bishops’ message of solidarity serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting vulnerable communities and offering a safe haven for those seeking refuge. By invoking Our Lady of Guadalupe’s protection, they offer a beacon of hope and compassion to those who fear the consequences of harsh immigration policies.
