Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has vowed that justice will be served following the deaths of four migrant workers who were burned alive in a suspected arson attack in southern Italy, a crime that has shocked the country and drawn widespread condemnation.

The victims, reported to include three Afghan nationals and one Pakistani citizen, were killed inside a vehicle during a violent attack in the Amendolara area of Cosenza province in Calabria. The incident reportedly occurred on Monday evening at a fuel station, where the vehicle was set on fire with the workers trapped inside.

Italian authorities have arrested two Pakistani nationals on suspicion of murder. Prosecutors said investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attack and whether additional individuals were involved.

Reacting to the tragedy, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the killings as a “horrific crime” and expressed her condolences to the families of the victims. Writing on social media, she said the incident had deeply shocked her and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that all those responsible are brought to justice.

Meloni stressed that Italy would not retreat in the face of violence and brutality, calling for a thorough investigation into every aspect of the case. She emphasized that accountability must be ensured for anyone connected to the attack.

According to Italian prosecutors, both the victims and the suspects were employed as seasonal agricultural workers in the region. Investigators are examining reports that the attack may have been linked to disputes within migrant labor networks operating in southern Italy.

The case has sparked renewed concern over the conditions faced by migrant workers in Italy’s agricultural sector, where many foreign laborers are employed in low-paid seasonal jobs. Human rights organizations and labor advocates have repeatedly raised concerns about exploitation, unsafe working conditions, and the influence of criminal groups involved in labor recruitment.

Additional details emerged after reports indicated that an injured Afghan survivor managed to escape the burning vehicle and reach a police station. Authorities have not yet released full details of his testimony, but investigators are expected to rely heavily on witness accounts as the inquiry continues.

The attack has attracted international attention, particularly in Afghanistan and Pakistan, where concerns have been raised over the safety of migrant workers abroad. Community leaders and migrant rights advocates have called for stronger protections for foreign laborers and more action against criminal networks that exploit vulnerable workers.

As investigations continue, the deaths of the four migrant workers have become a symbol of the risks faced by many migrants seeking employment opportunities overseas. Italian authorities have pledged to pursue justice for the victims and ensure that those responsible face the full force of the law.
