Italian universities have launched the sixth edition of the University Corridors for Refugees (Unicore) project, demonstrating a commitment to supporting refugee education. Nearly 40 institutions are participating in this initiative, which aims to provide scholarships to 67 refugee students enabling them to pursue a two-year bachelor’s program.
Applications for these scholarships are now open until April 15, 2024. Successful candidates are expected to commence their studies in September of the same year. The Unicore project, led by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and supported by key partners including the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, seeks to address the challenges faced by refugees in accessing higher education.
The initiative comes at a critical time, with refugees often encountering significant barriers to pursuing further education. By expanding opportunities for academic advancement, Unicore aims to empower refugee communities and facilitate their integration into society.
Since its inception in 2019, the project has seen remarkable growth, with an additional 44 universities joining the initiative. This expansion reflects a growing recognition of the importance of supporting refugee education and providing pathways for their future success.
Through comprehensive support and mentorship, Unicore aims to equip refugee students with the tools they need to build a brighter future for themselves and contribute positively to their communities. The project underscores Italy’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and providing opportunities for all, regardless of background or circumstance.
