Police in the UK have arrested an Egyptian national suspected of migrant smuggling, connected to a fatal incident during a Channel crossing over the weekend. The arrest was made by Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) late on Monday, July 29, 2024. The man is believed to be involved in smuggling migrants from Europe to the UK and is specifically linked to the death of a woman who was on a migrant boat attempting the crossing.
According to Agence France Presse (AFP), the French maritime authority reported that the woman’s death was part of a troubling new trend where deaths at sea are not solely due to drowning but also result from illness or crush injuries. The number of people attempting to cross the Channel has been rising, with recent incidents showing boats carrying as many as 86 people in dangerously overcrowded conditions.
The 29-year-old suspect, arrested in Manston, Kent, was questioned about facilitating illegal immigration and has been released on bail pending further investigations. Charities in France have held a vigil for the deceased woman, who was reportedly traveling with her family in hopes of reaching the UK.
Following the woman’s death off the French coast, the boat continued to Dover, UK, carrying around 40 people. NCA Branch Commander Mark Howes emphasized the danger of these crossings and expressed condolences to the victim’s family. He also highlighted the NCA’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks involved in organized immigration crime.
The woman’s death was the seventh migrant fatality in the Channel since July 12, and the French maritime authority has reported 23 deaths in migrant boat incidents this year, compared to 12 in 2023. Recent data shows that over 1,000 migrants arrived in Dover in the past week alone, with more than 16,000 arrivals since the beginning of the year.
In response to the rising number of dangerous crossings, the new Labour government is developing strategies to combat smuggling gangs. A new Border Security Command will be established, bringing together intelligence and enforcement agencies with enhanced powers and resources to tackle the criminal networks profiting from these perilous crossings. The recruitment for the Border Security Commander position has already begun as part of the government’s commitment to securing its borders.
