The National Unity Government (NUG) has appealed to the Thai Government to take action to support and protect undocumented Myanmar workers in Thailand. In a statement released on July 18, 2024, the NUG Ministry of Labour outlined several key measures they believe are necessary to improve the conditions for these workers.

The NUG has urged the Thai Government to begin issuing Non-Thai Identification Cards, commonly known as Pink Cards, to undocumented Myanmar migrants without delay. These cards would enable workers to obtain legal recognition, allowing them to work, stay, and travel freely within Thailand. Additionally, the NUG has called for these workers to be granted work permits or similar documentation to facilitate their legal employment status.

The NUG also seeks a revision of the current policy regarding Certification of Identity-CI Cards issued by the Myanmar military junta. They argue that these cards should be revoked or refused by Thai authorities, suggesting a reevaluation of the Thai Government’s stance on this matter.

Another significant concern raised is the issue of double taxation. The NUG has requested that the Thai Government prevent the Myanmar military junta from collecting income tax from the salaries of Myanmar workers, citing a bilateral agreement that prohibits such double taxation. They also want to stop the junta from pressuring workers to remit 25% of their earnings to their families through official channels that offer unfavorable exchange rates.

Lastly, the NUG has called for measures to assist Myanmar migrant workers whose passports have expired. They are requesting that the Thai Government allow these workers to extend their work permits and visas so they can continue their employment for an extended period.

This call to action from the NUG highlights the urgent need for reforms to protect the rights and well-being of Myanmar’s undocumented migrant workers in Thailand.
