The Philippines is pushing for stronger social security protections for its overseas workforce at the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) 353rd governing body session in Geneva. Labor Undersecretary Benedicto Ernesto Bitonio Jr. led the country’s delegation, advocating for a global framework that ensures Filipino migrant workers retain access to pensions, healthcare, and other essential benefits, regardless of their location
One of the key priorities discussed was social security portability, allowing migrant workers to continue receiving their benefits across different countries. The Philippine delegation emphasized the need for the ILO to establish standardized policies that guarantee inclusive social protection for migrant workers worldwide.
Beyond social security, the Philippines also called for improved job-matching systems and modernized skills certification programs to help workers adapt to changing labor market demands. Additionally, it urged stricter regulation of digital recruitment platforms to prevent exploitation and unethical hiring practices.
As a deputy member of the ILO governing body, the Philippines plays a crucial role in shaping global labor policies, particularly on migrant workers’ rights and fair recruitment. The country is actively working with regional partners to enhance migration policies that protect workers while ensuring labor market efficiency.
With millions of Filipinos employed abroad, the government remains committed to advocating for policies that promote fair treatment, economic security, and better working conditions for its overseas workforce.
