Indonesian migrant worker Sugianto has been praised for his heroic efforts in rescuing elderly residents from devastating forest fires in South Korea. His bravery has earned him recognition from both the public and local authorities, with South Korea even considering granting him a long-term residence permit.
Sugianto, a sailor working in Korea, played a crucial role in evacuating residents from the fires that swept through Uiseong-gun, Gyeongbuk, on March 22. Acting swiftly alongside the local village head, he helped warn residents to evacuate and personally carried an elderly individual with limited mobility 300 meters to safety.
Indonesia’s Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers, Abdul Kadir Karding, praised Sugianto as a “true ambassador” of Indonesia, commending his selfless actions. “Thank you for making Indonesia proud with your heroic actions,” he stated.
In response to his bravery, South Korea’s Ministry of Justice is considering awarding Sugianto an F-2 long-term residence permit, a privilege granted to those who have made significant contributions to society. Acting Minister Kim Seok-woo acknowledged Sugianto’s actions as an example of extraordinary service to the community.
Sugianto’s courage has not only saved lives but also strengthened the image of Indonesian migrant workers abroad, demonstrating the power of humanity in times of crisis.
