The African-German Doctoral Summer School is returning for its second edition in Hamburg, from September 9th to 14th, 2024. This interdisciplinary program is designed to enhance academic and social exchange, support ongoing research, and promote sociocultural integration for doctoral candidates and researchers with African or migration backgrounds.

The Summer School aims to:
- Promote Academic Excellence: By providing advanced training, workshops, and discussions led by experienced professionals.
- Support Social Integration: Addressing the challenges faced by doctoral students with migrant backgrounds and providing tools to enhance their integration into German society.
- Foster Networking: Encouraging connections among participants, mentors, and peers to build professional and personal networks.

- Workshops: Covering topics like communication in diverse societies, stress management, and research methodologies.
- Capacity-Building Training: Focused on developing skills necessary for academic and career advancement.
- Panel Discussions: Featuring experts who share insights on dissertation writing, grant proposal fundamentals, project management, and more.
- Social-Cultural Activities: Including excursions and guided walks to foster informal communication and cultural integration.
2024 Summer School Details
Target Group
The Summer School welcomes:
- Doctoral Candidates and Early-Stage Post-Docs: With African or migration backgrounds currently pursuing their degrees in Germany.
- Motivated Master’s Students: Those aspiring to pursue a doctoral degree are also eligible to apply.
Registration and Fees
- Registration Deadline: July 31, 2024. Applications can be submitted via this link.
- Fee: Participation is free of charge. However, participants are responsible for their travel and accommodation expenses.
Travel Allowance
- Travel Grant: Available to subsidize expenses for participants residing outside Hamburg. This grant is reimbursed after the Summer School, upon submission of relevant receipts (e.g., travel tickets and accommodation). Applications for the travel grant should be submitted with the participation application, also by July 31, 2024.
Accommodation
- Booking: Participants are encouraged to book their accommodations early due to Hamburg’s high demand as a tourist destination. A list of recommended accommodations is available here.

Recap of the 2023 Summer School
The inaugural African-German Doctoral Summer School was held from September 4th to 9th, 2023, in Hamburg. Organized by Dr. Taiwo Fagbemigun, Dr. Adekunle Adedeji, Prof. Dr. Johanna Buchcik, and Stella Kaltenbach, and supported by the Hamburg Research Academy (HRA) and Sozialbehörde Hamburg, this event aimed to foster academic and social exchange among researchers with and without an African background.
Highlights of the 2023 Event:
- Opening Ceremony: Welcoming messages by the organizers and Elena Krones-Nendza of HRA.

- Workshops and Seminars: Featured sessions on communication in diverse societies, stress management by Saskia Hanf-Robert, and other critical topics.
- Discipline Group Meetings: Provided opportunities for doctoral students to present their research and discuss stress management.
- Social Integration Workshop: Julia Hudy of Aktivoli led a session on migrant engagement and community participation in Hamburg.
- Excursions: Included a boat trip and guided walk to local landmarks such as Elbe Beach and Blankenese.
- Networking and Empowerment: The event concluded with a Business, Career, and Empowerment Dinner at Afrotopia, where participants received certificates of participation.
The Summer School was a collaborative effort involving Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW), Horizon Resources e.V., and University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE).
