Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has highlighted the strong bond between Albania and Italy, describing their relationship as one of brotherhood. Speaking during a news conference at Sustainability Week in Abu Dhabi, Rama explained that Albania’s decision to host Italian migrant centers is not about personal gain but a gesture of friendship and solidarity. He emphasized that this cooperation reflects the close ties between the two nations.
Ahead of his meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, whom he referred to as his sister, Rama joked about migrants cycling alongside the Giro d’Italia, which will pass through several Albanian cities this year, including Durres, Tirana, and Valona. Addressing concerns about the migrant centers, Rama downplayed opposition within Albania, stating that there had been only minor criticism. He expressed confidence in the centers, saying they have already acted as a deterrent, though challenges remain.
The centers have faced setbacks, including legal challenges in late 2024 that prevented the transfer of small groups of migrants. As a result, many Italian officers sent to operate the centers have been recalled, while others reportedly spent their time sightseeing in Albania due to limited activity. Despite these issues, Rama reaffirmed his commitment to the partnership, rejecting a proposal by Italian politician Matteo Renzi to turn the centers into prisons for Albanians detained in Italy.
Rama explained that the relationship with Italy goes beyond calculations of cost and benefit, emphasizing that true friendship and solidarity sometimes require difficult decisions. He recalled Italy’s support during challenging times, such as disaster relief efforts, and praised Italian firefighters for their bravery and organization after an earthquake in Albania. He described their actions as unforgettable, underscoring the spirit of brotherhood between the two countries.
During his meeting with Meloni in Abu Dhabi, Rama presented her with a birthday gift and serenaded her with “Tanti Auguri,” the Italian version of “Happy Birthday.” He admitted that his admiration for Italy influences his political stance, acknowledging his strong personal connection to the country.
