The Federal Government has issued a strong warning to Nigerians, particularly the youth, against embarking on illegal migration, emphasizing the severe and lasting trauma it can cause. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), delivered this message during the 2024 Conference and 6th National Discourse of The Companion in Abuja over the weekend.
Addressing the theme “Dilemma of the Nigerian Youth: Challenges at Home, Uncertainties Abroad,” Dabiri-Erewa acknowledged that while migration is a legal and often necessary pursuit, many Nigerian youths who choose to migrate illegally are lured by false promises of a better life abroad. Instead, they face exploitation, discrimination, and harsh living conditions, often returning home with harrowing tales of their experiences.
Dabiri-Erewa highlighted the significant risks associated with irregular migration, often referred to as illegal migration. She explained that without proper legal documentation, many migrants become vulnerable to exploitation, human trafficking, and severe human rights abuses. The lack of legal protection frequently results in these individuals working in dangerous and degrading conditions, far from the opportunities they initially sought.
Despite these challenges, NiDCOM is committed to engaging Nigerians in the Diaspora in meaningful ways. Dabiri-Erewa emphasized the importance of fostering stronger connections between Nigerian professionals abroad and those at home, leveraging their expertise, resources, and networks to create a positive impression of patriotism and contribute to national development.
