Libyan authorities have rescued at least 107 sub-Saharan migrants, including women and children, who were held captive in a compound in the town of Al Kufra in southeast Libya. The migrants, some of whom showed signs of torture and gunshot wounds, expressed their desire to seek refuge in Europe.
The rescue operation was conducted by the Libyan Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which raided a hideout in downtown Kufra. According to spokesperson Walid Alorafi, the migrants, including women, children, and elderly individuals, were found in distressing conditions, highlighting the harrowing experiences faced by many migrants in Libya.
The majority of the rescued migrants are reported to be from Somalia, underscoring the diverse origins of those seeking refuge in Europe. After being freed, the migrants were handed over to the illegal migration agency to complete necessary procedures.
A video posted on social media purported to show the raid, depicting Libyan officials sweeping the compound to rescue the migrants. While the authenticity of the video could not be independently verified, it aligns with accounts of the rescue operation provided by Libyan authorities.
Detention of migrants in Libya, often in overcrowded facilities and under deplorable conditions, has long been a source of concern for human rights organizations and international bodies. Many migrants are subjected to violence, torture, and exploitation at the hands of traffickers and authorities, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive action to address the plight of migrants in the country.
The United Nations has repeatedly called for the protection of migrants in Libya and condemned the shocking treatment of individuals held in arbitrary detention. Despite these calls, reports indicate that migrants continue to face grave risks, including interception at sea and forcible return to Libya, where they may be detained or exploited by smuggling gangs.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s recent visit to Libya underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing migration challenges and promoting development in North African countries. As Italy seeks to enhance ties with African nations through initiatives like the Mattei Plan, the need for sustainable solutions to the migration crisis remains paramount.
