The Nigerian government is set to launch a Command and Control Centre aimed at curbing irregular migration into the country. This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during the induction ceremony for operational officers of the Command and Control Centre for Regular Migration in Abuja.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach to migration, stating, “What we are doing today is the regular migration command and control centre. Very soon, we will come up with the irregular migration command and control centre.” He highlighted that efforts will extend beyond airports to include monitoring of land and marine borders.
The Minister also mentioned the upcoming commissioning of e-gates at international airports, which will enhance the pre-profiling of individuals entering the country. He underscored the need for precision in security measures, stressing that “security must be 100 percent accurate and not 99.9 percent,” as even a small error could have significant consequences. To ensure uninterrupted operations, he noted that the centre would be equipped with a continuous power supply.
Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nandap, announced that 123 officers, selected after extensive training, will staff the new centre, which aims to facilitate objective screening of migrants.
The establishment of this Command Centre reflects the Nigerian government’s commitment to managing migration effectively and enhancing national security.
