Spain’s Minister of Inclusion and Migration, Elma Saiz, has praised Morocco as a key partner in managing migration. She highlighted the success of their joint efforts, including innovative programs like circular migration, which benefit both countries.

Ahead of her visit to Morocco, Saiz described the country as a reliable and friendly ally. She emphasized that their collaboration is based on strong economic ties and effective migration policies. This partnership has been a model for tackling migration challenges while supporting economic growth.

Her visit coincides with the conclusion of the Wafira program, a pilot initiative that empowers rural Moroccan women through seasonal work in Spain. This program has helped 209 women gain professional skills and contribute to their communities. Saiz noted that all participants expressed interest in continuing, with 66% reporting significant personal and professional development.

The Wafira program demonstrates the benefits of circular migration, where people temporarily move between their home and host countries. Moroccan women have played a vital role in Spain’s agricultural sector, especially in harvesting red fruits, showing how such programs can transform lives and strengthen economies.

During her visit, Saiz plans to review the program’s outcomes and discuss its possible expansion. She expressed confidence in furthering cooperation, highlighting the shared political commitment between Spain and Morocco.

Despite criticism from some Spanish media and politicians, the partnership between the two nations remains strong. Both countries continue to work together on migration, security, and trade. Spain has frequently recognized Morocco’s efforts in combating human trafficking and addressing security threats, which have greatly benefited Spain’s safety.

Trade between the two nations is thriving, with commercial exchanges reaching €24 billion last year, the highest in their history. Morocco’s Ministry of Interior reported preventing over 78,000 irregular migration attempts and dismantling 332 human trafficking networks in the same period, showcasing its dedication to tackling migration issues.

Saiz’s visit reflects the ongoing commitment of Spain and Morocco to deepen their cooperation. Their partnership serves as a model for effective migration management and broader bilateral relations.
