Moroccan authorities have made significant strides in combating migrant smuggling and protecting vulnerable individuals. According to a recent government report presented to the House of Representatives on October 1st, authorities disrupted 48,963 smuggling attempts and dismantled 210 criminal networks involved in migrant trafficking since early 2024. These efforts showcase Morocco’s dedication to curbing illegal migration and ensuring safety at its borders.

The Royal Navy played a crucial role in these efforts, rescuing 14,260 people of different nationalities who were attempting dangerous sea crossings. These individuals were aiming to reach the northern shores of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean via unauthorized boat journeys. The navy’s quick response not only prevented loss of life but also provided critical assistance to those in need.

In addition to preventing smuggling attempts, 4,388 migrants were voluntarily returned to their home countries. The Moroccan authorities coordinated 1,664 of these repatriations with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). This collaboration reflects Morocco’s commitment to a humane approach, which emphasizes the dignity and well-being of migrants.

The Ministry of Interior underscored its dedication to protecting victims of smuggling, ensuring their safety through partnerships with diplomatic missions in Morocco. By adopting a human rights-based strategy, the ministry aims to provide comprehensive support to migrants, from immediate rescue operations to assistance with voluntary repatriation.

To enhance border security and prevent transnational crime, Morocco has strengthened cooperation with regional and international partners, particularly those in Europe. This collaboration focuses on enhancing surveillance, monitoring borders, and fighting human trafficking. The partnerships have improved the country’s ability to address complex issues linked to migration and cross-border crime.

The ministry has also modernized its security services, incorporating advanced technology for monitoring and surveillance. Upgrades include better communication systems and transportation tools, which have significantly boosted the effectiveness of security operations.

Moreover, Morocco continues to implement its national migration and asylum strategy, which includes the regularization of refugees’ status through the Office for Refugees and Stateless Persons. This office works in coordination with a committee to review cases of refugees registered with the UNHCR. As of mid-September, the office officially recognized the status of 1,638 refugees.

Through these comprehensive measures, Morocco demonstrates a robust and humane response to migrant smuggling and trafficking, enhancing both national security and the protection of migrants’ rights.
