A Venezuelan migrant, Darwin Andres Gomez-Izquiel, has been sentenced to one year in prison for kicking a police officer during a violent brawl in Times Square. The incident occurred on January 27, 2024, and involved a confrontation between New York City police officers and a group of migrants. Surveillance footage from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office captured the chaotic scene, where suspects were seen kicking and punching officers who were trying to disperse an unruly crowd outside a migrant shelter near Times Square.
Gomez-Izquiel, aged 19, was convicted of second-degree assault. Following his sentence, he is also set to be deported back to Venezuela. During the sentencing, Gomez-Izquiel reportedly smirked but chose not to speak when given the opportunity.
